The Portrait. We use portraits as objects of remembrance and reverence, of seduction and glorification. From the keepsakes in lockets as tiny remembrances of love, to the likenesses of leaders meant to inspire and seduce with their power. They can stir, and confront, and drive us to action. Just as they can lull in longing for a time since passed. They act as a mirror in whose reflection we find the inward experiences of ourselves, or as a window from which we look out toward the virtues of another.
Give us pause in our present time of turmoil and uncertainty, by showing us the likenesses of those that inspire and fill you with hope. Analog and digital manipulation in all its forms welcome. Monochrome or color, all subjects, analog, digital or antique processes, photographers of all skill levels and locations are welcome.

You can enter your images online at Smarter Entry For best results, make sure your image is 1200 pixels @72 dpi on the longest side, Images should be in JPEG format, sRGB color space.
Eligibility
All photographers regardless of location, age or skill level. Images previously selected for exhibition at the SE Center for Photography within two years of the current exhibition are not eligible.
Juror
Our juror for the The Portrait is Brandon Thibodeaux. Raised in Beaumont, Texas, his photography career began in 2002 at a small daily newspaper while studying photography at Lamar University. He now resides in Dallas, TX, and his clients include Atlantic Records, BBVA Compass Bank, ED&F Man, Fader, Forbes, FT Weekend Magazine, Guardian Weekend Magazine, Harper’s, HGTV, Match.com, Monocle, Mother Jones, MSNBC, The New York Times, NPR, Oprah Winfrey Network, Shell Oil, Urban Land Institute, World Wildlife Fund, and The Wall Street Journal, among others.
His work is recognized by American Photo Magazine, Photo District News, and the Oxford American lists him as one of their 100 Under 100, New Superstars of Southern Art. His photographic project in the Mississippi Delta, “When Morning Comes”, was awarded Center’s Gallerist Choice Award 2013, AI-AP American Photography 30, the Critical Mass Solo Show Award 2013, the 2014 Michael P. Smith Fund For Documentary Photography Grant and the 2016 Palm Springs Photo Festival Portfolio Review Award.
Exhibition Details
35-40 Selected images will hang in the SE Center’s main gallery space for approximately one month with the opportunity to be invited for a solo show at a later date. In addition, selected images are featured in the SE Center social media accounts (FB, IG, Twitter) and an archived, online slide show. A video walkthrough of each exhibition is also featured and archived. Openings are timed to coincide with Greenville, South Carolina’s First Fridays, a celebration of art, food and music. Participating artists that can attend have the opportunity for a Portfolio Review by SE Center Director Michael Pannier on the following Saturday morning (reservations needed).
Fees
- $35 for up to 5 Images, $6 for each additional image up to 10.
- Members, $28 for up to 5 Images, $5 for each additional image up to 10.
Sales
The SE Center encourages sales during exhibitions and retains a 40% commission on work sold. The artist receives 60% of the sale price. If a print is sold it will be ordered from the photographer at the time of sale.
