The search is on to find the second winner of Close-up Photographer of the Year, in association with Affinity Photo. Photographers have until May 17th 2020 to enter the competition and be in with a chance of winning a cash prize of £2,500.

Close-up Photographer of the Year (CUPOTY) is an annual competition showcasing the best close-up, macro and micro photography from around the world. The competition is open to all, using any type of camera, mobile phone or microscope.

We are passionate about the world up close and want to place this challenging genre of photography into the spotlight it deserves by championing the shortlisted and winning photographers, as well as their images.

Categories

  • Insects
    A new category for this year allows insects to take centre stage, revealing the huge diversity of these six-legged creatures.
  • Animals
    Any animal, apart from insects belong here, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, molluscs, arachnids and mammals.
  • Plants & Fungi
    Plants, fungi and lichen photographed in detail or captured up-close within their habitat.
  • Intimate Landscape
    Focussing on natural but non-living things such as stone, sand, water, ice, fire, smoke, light and reflections. Capture the great outdoors in close-up.
  • Manmade World
    Objects and materials conceived or created by humans such as everyday items, machinery and architecture, as well as studio work involving drop art or bubbles.
  • Micro
    Pictures on any subject captured with a light or electron microscope
  • Young Cupoty
    Open to photographers aged 17 or under, with no restrictions on subject matter – if it’s close it counts!

The prize fund totals £5,000.

Judges

Matt Doogue joins the judging panel this year to sit alongside other award-winning photographers David Maitland, Sue Bishop, Ross Hoddinott, and Robert Thompson, as well as editors Keith Wilson and Tracy Calder.

Photographers retain full copyright.

Winning and shortlisted images may be used by Close-up Photographer of the Year and the competition’s sponsors for the marketing and promotion of the competition only, and for a maximum of three years after the shortlist is announced.
