Historic Photographer of the Year calls on photographers from around the globe to explore and capture the very best historic places and cultural sites that the world has to offer.
Whether it’s a ruined English castle, an underground Roman villa or the haunting beauty of a long-forgotten battlefield, historical sites are among the most picturesque places to photograph on Earth.
The 2020 Awards launches for entries on 14th July 2020 and is open to amateur and professional photographers around the world. With varying restrictions in place across the globe rather than asking entrants to head out and explore, this year we’re instead seeking entries already captured and are keen to discover the very best images of fascinating historic locations that reside in your archives.
Entries will be judged on originality, composition and technical proficiency alongside the story behind the image and its historical impact. Judging all entries will be a panel of experts including Claudia Kenyatta, Director of Regions for Historic England, broadcaster and historian Dan Snow of History Hit TV, head of the television channel Sky HISTORY Dan Korn, award winning heritage photographer Matt Emmett, author and digital colourist Marina Amaral, Chairman of The Association for Historical and Fine Art Photography Kira Zumkley, and co-founder of Trip Historic Elli Lewis. The winners will be announced in November 2020.
The Awards are run by Trip Historic, the leading online travel guide to the world’s historic sites. Official partners for 2020 include History Hit TV, a multi-channel history network led by historian and broadcaster Dan Snow – dedicated to bringing you the most extraordinary, dramatic, important and fascinating stories of our shared past; television channel Sky HISTORY; the Association For Historical And Fine Art Photography; and Historic England, the public body that helps people care for, enjoy and celebrate England’s spectacular historic environment, from beaches to battlefields to parks and pie shops.

Historic England helps protect and champion our heritage. We cherish both the everyday gems and the famous treasures. Photographing these places and moments in time helps provide a nostalgic and important record of our distinctive cities and regions as well as the way we encounter and enjoy them.
England’s heritage is loved and cared for by millions; our world-renowned, iconic buildings, places and customs draw visitors from all corners of the world. Our heritage stimulates creativity and culture from the great engineers and architects who have shaped our surroundings, to the celebrated artists and writers who have documented the moments and feelings it invokes.

Where History Happened
From world renowned locations that marked step changes in the fate of empires and civilisations to little known spots where quiet yet momentous moments took place, there are sites all around us that saw the very nature of human history change.
Run in partnership with television channel Sky HISTORY™, this category is inspired by those locations that saw the very story of history take place – be it a battlefield that changed the course of conflict or a non-descript building that housed a scientific breakthrough or step change in social development.
To enter the Where History Happened category, you simply have to capture sensational shots of locations that witnessed fascinating moments from history. It need not be a moment that changed the world, it could equally be something that had an important impact on local or social change.
Crucially, to qualify for this category, your associated comment must highlight both the event itself and why you feel it was an important moment in history. Enter your images of locations that changed history now and share your shots of these true timeless treasures.
Prizes
The overall winner will see their work showcased on the official competition website and will receive a cash prize of £250, while each category winner will receive their own unique money-can’t buy experience.
