The sweet delight of an endless night. This month we are looking for images inspired by the night – in a literal or abstract way. From hazy dreams to harsh realities. From deserted backstreets to the glitz and glamor of a sleepless city. Neon lights and foreboding shadows. Show us darkness, the underworld, the hidden.

Competition Judged By Christophe Jacrot
Christophe Jacrot is a French contemporary art photographer acclaimed for his atmospheric images of cities at night, notably New York, Hong Kong and his home of Paris. He talks of two ways of photographing the world, “on the one hand grasping its horror, and on the other sublimating it”, and his choice is firmly the latter, using elements such as rain, snow and darkness to create windows into a moody, romantic and cinematic world.
For a recent body of work he travelled to Norilsk – a city in northern Siberia shut off almost entirely from the outside world and perhaps the perfect backdrop for his singular, evocative style. Capturing silhouettes against the unforgiving polar mist and monolithic Soviet architecture, he creates a haunting, otherworldly picture of life in the harshest of environments, and in doing so reminds us of the incredible breath of human experience.
Jacrot has released four highly acclaimed books and has been exhibited all over the world, and was the recipient of the 2018 Niépce Prize, awarded to an exceptional professional photographer living and working in France. He was recently the subject of a television documentary by the French channel ARTE.
