Portals have given photographers subject matter for their cameras since Niepce began experimenting with photography. There is an intrigue and mystery that begs the photographer and viewer to question and wonder what is on the other side.

Elliot Erwitt’s iconic image entitled California Kiss immediately pops into my minds eye. And what about Atget’s images of store fronts in Paris? The Boulevard de Strasbourg image of the corset shop is just one of many images he captured. Sam Abell’s image entitled Through Lace Curtains makes you feel like you are standing right there with him as he snaps the shutter. And we all will never forget the story about Alice and the rabbit hole written by photographer Lewis Carroll. Alice looked thru the opening and found a Wonderland.

Eligibility

Submissions are open to all photographers both professional and amateur working in all photographic mediums and styles. International entries are welcomed. Work that has been previously exhibited at A Smith Gallery is not eligible.

Juror

Ann Jastrab will be the juror of “portal”. Ann is the Executive Director at the Center for Photographic Art (CPA) in Carmel, California. CPA strives to advance photography through education, exhibition and publication. These regional traditions—including mastery of craft, the concept of mentorship, and dedication to the photographic arts—evolved out of CPA’s predecessor, the renowned Friends of Photography established in 1967 by iconic artists Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock and Cole Weston. While respecting these West Coast traditions, CPA is also at the vanguard of the future of photographic imagery.

Entry Fee

$38 for the first 5 images, $7 per each additional image. Submissions of 11 or more images are eligible for a review of the submitted images by the gallery directors.
